Here Kitty Kitty Kitty – Preventing Kitty’s Great Escape!

Cindy's Dali

Summer brings such lovely weather. It also brings beautiful butterflies and song birds. And what is more interesting to an inside kitty than butterflies and song birds? Actually, cats don’t seem to care if something is pretty, it just needs to be moving! Unfortunately at our house this can include such things as June bugs, crickets and Cicadas and the all time favorite – houseflies! With so many temptations outside, it is often at this time of year that Kitty will be most likely to try to escape out that slow closing door.

Before Kitty escapes, make sure she is somewhat safe if she gets out. Make sure she is up-to-date on all shots and vaccinations. It is important that all animals are vaccinated for rabies and distemper, so start with at least these two shots. While getting these at the veterinarian’s office, it would also be a good idea to get a microchip inserted under your cat’s skin if she doesn’t already have it. Many animal rescues microchip animals before they are adopted so they can get them back to their homes more easily if they get lost. Microchipping sounds a lot more painful than it actually is. It is simply a matter of inserting a needle under the cat’s skin and inserting a tiny microchip. With this in place, if Kitty does escape and someone finds her, it is very easy to determine that she has a home and where it is. Actually, it is a good idea to have this done for all your pets!

Meanwhile, be extra vigilant in monitoring the outside doors as everyone goes in and out to make sure that Kitty stays inside where she belongs. Sit-Stay-Play in-home pet sitting and more can help with all your pet sitting & poop scooping needs (yes, they also clean litter boxes!). Have a safe and happy summer!
