Craigslist: Friend or Foe for Unwanted Pets?

Recently there has been many pet drop offs at various locations around Muncie. Unfortunately it’s a sign of the times. People are pressed for money and don’t want or can’t feed their pets. An unwanted litter of puppies could be prevented by spaying or neutering. ARF has taken on many of these abuse cases but how many other dogs & cats aren’t as lucky to have someone find them?

In a recent newspaper article in The Star Press, http://www.thestarpress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011110060357, Bob Jessee from the Muncie Animal Shelter suggested that if you’re having a hard time caring for your pet to place an ad on Craigslist. Hmmm. I know he’s trying to give solutions to a huge problem but really, Craigslist? That IS an option but do you know what happens many times to pets adopted from Craigslist ads? It’s not pretty. Here are some examples:

  • pit bulls are often picked up/adopted by dog fighters for fighting or breeding purposes
  • adult dogs & puppies are picked up/adopted to be used as bait dogs–don’t know what bait dogs are? Again, it isn’t pretty. Usually their mouths are wrapped with duct tape, legs are tied together and then dogs are allowed and encouraged to attack, to practice their “skills” for upcoming dog fights
  • small cats & kittens are used as snake food & dog food
  • animal torturers frequently adopt pets from Craigslist & FREE ads…you can imagine what they do to the poor pets

So, I highly recommend you DO NOT put your pets on Craigslist. I know your choices are narrowed down but please, PLEASE think about the harm that could come upon your pet if someone with ulterior motives adopts him/her.

We would be more than happy to help you find a new home for your pet if it’s necessary or help you with training & other things.

Please contact us at www.sit-stay-play.com if you’d like assistance. There are other options–PLEASE DON’T PUT YOUR PETS ON CRAIGSLIST.

Thank you,
